"Panic in the Sky" part 6. It's the final battle for the fate of mankind. The heroes of Earth press the attack to confront Warworld once and for all, but Brainiac's final solution may prove the deadliest attack of all. Warworld ’s hordes are arriving in large numbers. Batman ’s ground unit is doing its best to keep them at bay. Prof. Hamilton has rigged up a dispersal cannon . He and Luthor fire it at the hordes. Jimmy wonders what is happening inside Warworld. Maxima pledges to fight beside the heroes, because Brainiac has treated her like a slave. Superman does not want her help, because he knows her nature. She has been trouble from the first day she has appeared on Earth . Kilowog and Wonder Woman say that Maxima would never make a sacrifice like Draaga . Maxima is insulted and gears up for attack. But Deathstroke stops them, saying that they have a more important mission. Superman has already used his x-ray vision to isolate three access routes to reach Brainiac. Agent Liberty says that they should split into three groups. Deathstroke puts himself, Metron and Superman in charge of one group each. Maxima wants to join them but Superman denies her permission. She keeps Guy and the Metal-Men in charge of her safe-keeping. psychic death-ray The three groups head for Brainiac from three different sides. Flash has been given the responsibility to breach Brainiac’s defenses. But he does not achieve his goal. Brainiac uses electricity to knock him out. Then he unleashes the most powerful weapon on Warworld, himself. Brainiac uses the “ Augmentation System ” to magnify his telepathic powers a thousand times, unleashing what appears to be a “ psychic death radiation ”. The heroes are forced to retreat and many civilians caught in the radius of the radiation disintegrate. Brainiac has built an impenetrable force-field around himself. energy grid Next, Brainiac deploys hovering discs over Metropolis . The discs interconnect to form an unbreakable energy-grid , which even the heroes’ laser-rifles cannot destroy. Back on Warworld, Superman says that their groups are no match for Brainiac’s power. Dubbilex warns them that Brainiac has already initiated his plan of reducing Metropolis to table-top size. Superman orders a suicide mission to stop Brainiac. Maxima plays Guy and the Metal-Men to allow her a chance to attack Brainiac. She is surprised that Guy is taking orders from Superman. Guy is insulted and offers to free Maxima for help in taking down Brainiac. He uses his ring to create a pathway to the central chamber for Maxima and the Metal-Men. The operation is partially successful. Maxima is undamaged but the Metal-Men have obviously taken the radiation hit. But even Maxima falls before Brainiac’s psychic power. Flash plays a desperate gamble. He picks up a shard of glass and hurls it towards the cables connecting Brainiac to Warworld. Maxima takes the chance. She attacks a now diminished Brainiac. Some of the heroes appear on earth via a boom tube and crush the energy-discs, thus breaking up the energy grid. Maxima vs Brainiac Brainiac tries a last chance to save himself from Maxima. He crawls with death-like slowness and is successful in ejecting a sphere outside of Warworld. Maxima is stopped by Superman. But Brainiac is lobotomized . His brain is gone. "Panic in the Sky" part 2. Even Superman can't stand alone against the power of Warworld. So the Man of Steel gathers the toughest group of super-heroes ever assembled, Dirty Dozen-style, but will even they be enough to stop this new threat? The cosmically astute Metron has visited Almerac. He is speechless to see the civilisation reduced to ruins by Warworld's attack. He is musing when he is suddenly attacked telepathically by Brainiac . He is captured but manages to teleport his Mobius Chair to Earth. Meanwhile, Dubbilex, Superman and Guardian are removing the debris inside Project Cadmus when the Mobius Chair appears. Dubbilex senses that something sinister has befallen Metron. While they are at this, the Gods Orion and Lightray appear in search of Metron. Superman informs them that Warworld has captured Metron. They leave for Warworld without heeding to Superman's warnings. Upon Warworld, Orion and Lightray are quickly subdued by, Supergirl, Maxima and other warriors. Superman is telepathically mocked by Brainiac. He realises that he will need the help of other heroes to win this battle. So he contacts Lex Luthor for equipment and then goes out in search of others. Superman requests Deathstroke to be his team's field leader, meets Diana and Aquaman and then broadcasts the news all over the World. Heroes assemble from all over the World to listen to Superman. Meanwhile, Aquaman is attacked underwater by Brainiac's Headship and captured. The Headship appears outside the Heroes' headquarters with him. Notes: Triangle 1992 #10. Whatever Happened To The Man of Tomorrow? This is an imaginary story (Which may never happen, but then again may) about a perfect man who came from the sky and did only good. It tells of his twilight, when the great battles were over and the great miracles long since performed; of how his enemies conspired against him and of that final war in the snowblind wastes beneath the Northern Lights; of the women he loved and of the choice he made between them; of how he broke his most sacred oath, and how finally all the things he had were taken from him save for one. It ends with a wink. It begins in a quiet Midwestern town, one summer afternoon in the quiet Midwestern future. Away in the big city, people still sometimes glance up hopefully from the sidewalks, glimpsing a distant speck in the sky... but no: it's only a bird, only a plane. Superman died ten years ago. This is an Imaginary Story... Aren't they all? In the Silver Age Superman's final story he and his allies must battle his entire rogues gallery as the fight turns deadly. There is only one guarantee, Superman will not be seen again after. The seeds had been planted in " Crisis on Infinite Earths " Superman's career was about to come to an end, but the Man of Steel was not about to go out with a whimper. In " Whatever happened to the Man of Tomorrow? ", a two-part tale by writer Alan Moore and artist Curt Swan, the adventures of the Silver Age Superman came to a dramatic close. Beginning in this issue and concluding in Action Comics #583 , Moore weaved a tale dubbed an "imaginary story." With no restrictions, Moore told his version of the last Superman story and also brought the tale of many of the Last Son of Krypton's villains and allies to an abrupt close. Superman found himself under attack by his foes. With his identity accidentally exposed to the public, Superman faced an onslaught from Metallo, the Kryptonite Man and a combined version of Lex Luthor and Brainiac. Superman eventually discovered the villain behind his troubles was Mr. Mxyzptlk. Superman defeated his now deadly foe, then retired from the limelight, marrying Lois Lane and taking up the identity of Jordan Elliott as a tribute to his late Kryptonian father, Jor-El. Storyline involving the 4 Superman Series: Supergirl, Superman, Adventure Comics and Action Comics. Story involving the fate of the future, guest starring the Legion of Superheroes. The Future The first scene of this story is set in the future. The Legion of Superheroes is trying to save civilians from disappearing into nothingness: the future is disappearing, and according to Brainiac 5, it's all because of his ancestor, Brainiac 1. Brainiac 5 has established that his ancestor had killed Superman, which has resulted in the capture of all bottled cities. Since all the planets of the 31st century are originary from those bottled cities, and the cities were never released, then the planets never could have existed. As Brainiac borrows energy from fellow legionnaires, he disappears back to the present promising to see them again and saying: "Long Live the Legion". The Present In the present, Brainiac has started to invade New Krypton. As the Legion of Superheroes' Espionnage Squad recruit Mon-El and Superboy to help them save the bottled cities, Supergirl and Alura battle on New Krypton. Once they are all reunited, General Zod asks Supergirl and Mon-El to leave before orderring his troops to arrest the Legion. Alura comes in to prevent them from escaping, and fights Superboy. Supergirl arrives and sees her "cousin" hurting her mother. As they tell her Zod orderred their arrest, Supergirl explains to Alura the Legion is a Superhero team. Alura goes and meets General Zod for more informition on his battle technique while the Legion attacks Brainiac's ship to free the bottled cities. Thanks to Brainiac 5, they manage to breach the security field. Superman and Mon-El have managed to save one bottled city. Outside, New Krypton is invaded and Kandor is turned into another bottled city. As Superman tries to save Kandor, he is hit with a blast of red sunlight, and falls in the middle of the sky. It is then revealed that Brainiac 1 worked alongside Lex Luthor and General Zod to destroy New Krypton... Storyline that ran through Saga of the Swamp Thing (Later Swamp Thing) from issues #37 to #50. American Gothic involves the introduction of John Constantine, and what that meant for Swamp Thing. Essentially, Cosntantine works as a sort of plot driver for the series of stories that make up “American Gothic.” An evil South-American magic cult named the Brujeria are using the Crisis on Infinite Earths to help them take over the supernatural arena, and as part of their plot, they began having all sorts of evil events take place across America. Constantine manipulates Swamp Thing into taking down these threats. Eventually, it all leads to basically one big ol’ fight between good and evil, and literally the Ultimate Darkness against the Ultimate Light. There are a series of artists at work during this storyline – the standard brilliance of Stephen Bissette and John Totleben, but also impressive work from Rick Veitch and Stan Woch on pencils. Moore handled the slow build towards issue #50 about as well as any writer has ever handled a build to a “big” issue number – this is a storyline without being a strict storyline (for most of the story, at least). The final battle in #50, though, is given all the trappings you would expect from a “big” issue, with Moore playing with the vast history of DC Comics and their supernatural characters. Moore stayed on the title for a little while longer (and did some excellent work), but in many ways, this was the pinnacle of his Swamp Thing run.
