The Saga of Swamp Thing

45 · Vol. The Saga of Swamp Thing

In " Ghost Dance " a story about a young woman trying to drown out the sounds of her ancestors' violent act comes back to haunt a young couple. Swamp Thing might be able to help them--but he's about to take the next step in his spirit quest with John Constantine. Inspired by the story of Sarah Winchester, daughter in law of the owner of Winchester Repeating Arms Company. The firm invented the Winchester rifle, and Sarah was always horrified by the number of lives lost to the firearm. As a result, after the death of her husband, she decided to continue to expand the Winchester mansion, randomly instructing builders to add doors, floors, and stairways, some of which led to dead ends, others leading to huge drops. She believed this would help to confuse and evade the spirits of the victims of the Winchester rifle. The Swamp Thing issue refers to the Cambridge Repeater instead, though there is mention of it being a cheap imitation of the Winchester. Notes: Last issue under the title The Saga of the Swamp Thing . Series continues under the title Swamp Thing . Next issue Swamp Thing #46 .

Batman: The Dark Knight" The Dark Knight Returns

Story arc · 5 issues

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns is a Batman comic book mini-series written and drawn by Frank Miller and published by DC Comics from February to June 1986. This story arc is set 20 years into the future, where Bruce Wayne is an elderly man still guilt-ridden over Jason Todd's death. Plot Summary The Dark Knight Returns is set ten years in an alternate future, with a worn and weary, aged Bruce Wayne. He numbs his conscience with alcohol to soothe the guilt he feels for his responsibility for the death of Jason Todd . Gotham City is under siege by a vicious criminal gang who call themselves the Mutants. Wayne unleashes his demons to confront the new threats to Gotham, and Batman is born again. Wayne finds himself struggling with the decline of his physique as he patrols and defends Gotham City. An inexperienced but courageous young girl named Carrie Kelly saves Batman´s life, and Wayne takes her in as a new Robin . Batman is seen now as a menace to Gotham´s society and an anti-vigilantism wave is carried on from the government. Even Commissioner Gordon became a victim of both, criminals and government as well after he killed a teenager in self-defense. He is replaced by Ellen Yindel, a well known anti-vigilante cop. Batman found out how the mutants gained their power and their high-tech weaponry - discovering a net of corruption inside the U.S. Army. Defeating most of the mutants, Batman faces the leader, however his advanced age became a disadvantage for him as is eventually incapacitated by the mutant leader. Fortunately, Carrie Kelly appears and rescues Batman, getting him the Batmobile. After initially mistaking him for Dick Grayson , Batman confirms Kelly as the third Robin. After his recovery, Batman and Robin lure the Mutants to a sewer dump ("the pipe), where Batman defeats the Mutant leader (released from prison by Commissioner Gordon) in hand-to-hand combat, effectively breaking the gang. During the time Batman was gone, the Joker entered a state of catatonia, being unable to find something to live for. After Batman´s reappearance, the Joker woke up and convinced Dr. Wolper that he has been rehabilitated. When Wolper takes the Joker to a talk show, he begins a killing spree releasing his joker venom to the audience and kills Wolper as well. Batman appears to stop him, however the Joker escapes due to the fact that Batman had to struggle with the police. Batman and Robin began to search for the Joker, after he killed a group of boy scouts and Robin avoids more deaths after the Joker planted a bomb in a roller coaster. Batman paralyzes the Joker and faces a dilemma on whether if he should kill him or not. The Joker laughs and calls Batman a coward, he then snaps his own neck to blame Batman for his death. Superman is called by the U.S. government to stop Batman after he returns from a mission in South America. A lethal group known as the Sons of Batman have been using deadly methods against criminals. Batman and Robin decides to train them to use non-lethal methods. During this time, Oliver Queen , formerly known as the Green Arrow, warns Bruce about Superman and the government plans. Batman eventually faces off Superman in crime alley. After a rough battle, Bruce seemingly gains the upper hand thanks to his prior preparation and Oliver's kryptonite arrow. With Superman knocked out by the effect of the kryptonite, Wayne lays down a final monologue on Superman regarding how he is "the one man who beat him". After that, he tricks Superman into believing he suffered a heart attack in order to be able to escape the government. Clark goes to Bruce's funeral where he hears a heart beat inside the coffin, and winks at Carrie. He then realizes that Wayne faked his own death. After this event, Wayne begins a new life with his "army": Robin and Green Arrow. The Dark Knight Returns helped to re-define Batman and portray the character as he was originally conceived during the 1930's. 44 · Vol. The Saga of Swamp Thing

Cover by Steve Bissette. " Bogeymen " written by Alan Moore, penciled by Steve Bissette, inked by Ron Randall and John Totleben, colored by Tatjana Wood and lettered by John Costanza. This story marks more of Alan Moore’s exploration of the darker side of Americana, this time exploring the myth of the serial killer. Told partly as it is from the perspective of a man who has a particular infatuation with numbers, eye colour and the bogeyman. He tracks one of his victims to the Louisiana swamps, where he ruthlessly deposes of the bodies in the quagmire. Of course while he’s there he happens upon a certain nature elemental... This story also features Swampy paying Abby a visit via the plughole of her bathroom sink and a side story with Constantine having a chance encounter with a certain caped crusader. Notes: Not marked as a Crisis crossover issue, but the events of this issue take place between issue 2-4 of Crisis on Infinite Earths .

The Saga of Swamp Thing

43 · Vol. The Saga of Swamp Thing

Swamp Thing wanders through his marsh territory, dropping growths from his anatomy as he goes. Chester comes along a little later and discovers these, believing them to be some kind of yam with possible psychedelic properties. He goes back to his apartment to fathom exactly what the substance is but is interrupted by a friend Dave whose wife Sandy is dying from cancer. Chester gives Dave a sample of the substance he’d just discovered, believing it may have a relieving antidote for her pain. Soon afterwards Chester is interrupted again this time by a violent dope-fiend: Milo. Knowing of Chester’s often rumoured drug use Milo decides to pay his ‘old buddy’ a visit and ends up stealing a large portion of the ‘fruit’ thus leaving our hero with very little of the substance left. Dave gives Sandy her portion of the fruit and she experiences beautiful psychedelic imagery, she walks out into the garden and feels at one with mother earth. They make love in the rain before she dies in Dave’s arms. While Dave’s wife experiences a portion of heaven, Milo on the other hand has quite a separate effect with the substance, experiencing more of the left handed path to the otherness of mortality. He has a violent and ghoulish bad trip before running out on a busy road and being hit by a passing truck, dying instantly. After learning of the two separate incidents Chester contemplates that the fruit is some kind of “psychedelic litmus paper...you eat it and it tells you whether you’re a good or bad person”. He considers that he should consume the tiny piece that Milo had left him, reflecting that it would tell him of his own moral compass, though he is divided because though he considers himself a good person there are number of stupid thing’s that he had done in his life. After contemplating for a good while he decides that there are certain thing’s he does not want to know about himself...

The Saga of Swamp Thing

41 · Vol. The Saga of Swamp Thing

Comics Legend Alan Moore writes this horrifying tale, as a voodoo ritual release ancient memories and violence on the set of a soap opera set on a real Southern plantation, set in the days of slavery. Continued in issue #42! Opening this issue a narrator asks what the dead think about when they try to rest, and also if they talk. All the while the pages show an old dilapidated plantation mansion. Whispers and memories begin to arise from the house. The past comes alive from the wall and we hear the screams and pleas of those who used to live and suffer in the great house. We hear a woman, Charlotte, who after consorting with a man, a slave, is being taken to watch her lover be whipped by a Wesley, the plantation owner. Swamp Thing and Abigail Cable are in the swamp where they are discussing what John Constantine had mentioned about something evil and dark that will be happening in Louisiana soon. He asks whether she has seen anything strange. Abby responds that all seems well, and most people in town are excited because there is a television soap opera set in the Old South being filmed at the remains of a real plantation. Most of the black people in town have been cast as extras, playing slaves. Tensions on the set of the soap opera are high as the actors struggle with racism. Richard Deal and Angela Lamb wander around the set where she complains about everything she sees. Elsewhere on the plantation, another actor, Billy Carlton, is talking to his manager when he suddenly goes into a daze. Back in the swamp Abby tells Alec that she has gotten a part time job at the plantation, and tells him that the actors and extras at the film set are all stressed and anxious. Later at the plantation the actors are running through a scene when suddenly, Billy seems to be possessed by the spirit of a slave that used to work at the old plantation known as Robertaland. He refers to Angela as Charlotte, the white mistress of the Robertaland plantation. The director and other actors believe that Billy is improvising, and praise him. After Billy's performance, Angela seems to be warming up to him. During another rehearsal the director notices the extras acting strangely. Richard, despite not being comfortable playing a racist, becomes possessed by the spirit of Wesley Jackson, Charlotte's husband and the owner of Robertaland. He imagines himself whipping and Billy, but when he comes back to his senses, Billy has no idea what he's talking about. The director, assumes that he was also improvising. Later, Angela catches Billy doing cocaine, and he begs her to promise not to tell his manager about it. At night Alec comes by the set to investigate and feels a strange energy about it but leaves. After a couple of days Abby goes to the set and finds a co-worker named Alice, who seems confused and disoriented. When Abby goes back to Alec, she tells him something is wrong and they go investigate fearing this to be what Constantine warned of. When they arrive all the extras have been possessed and are performing voodoo rituals on the lawn. All of the cast members have also become possessed. Richard who is being possessed by Wesley Jackson discovers Angela, who is Charlotte, and Billy, who is William, kissing. Wesley becomes disgusted with his wife and drags William down to the basement and the dialogue from the beginning of the issue is spoken again by the actors. William is tied to a pole, and Wesley pulls out a knife. He forces Charlotte to watch as he flays William.
