Plot Summary Zero Year is an eleven-part story arc in the Batman comic book, written by Scott Snyder and pencilled by Greg Capullo, which tells the untold tale of an inexperienced Bruce Wayne's formative years in his war on crime, before honing his craft and establishing himself as The Batman. Someone said In this story, a young Bruce Wayne attempts to save Gotham City from the murderous group known as the Red Hood Gang. However, since Bruce has yet to establish a reputation in the criminal underworld, and has yet to turn himself into the fearsome figure of Batman, he has been having a hard time winning his war. His inexperience, carelessness and uncontrolled anger have not only stalled his mission but also strained his relationship with his faithful butler Alfred Pennyworth. Bruce's uncle, Philip Kane, who had declared Bruce legally dead during his absence from Gotham, has taken control of Wayne Enterprises and is using it to produce weapons. In an attempt to improve the company's public image, Philip attempts to convince Bruce to take control of his family's company, but Bruce refuses, as has no interest in living as "Bruce Wayne", focusing all his attention on his war on crime. To make matters worse, the Red Hood gang is stealing the weapons produced by the company to further terrorize the city. Phil's leading strategist, Edward Nygma, the future Riddler, advises Phil to kill Bruce in order to solve their problems but Philip refuses and still tries to convince Bruce to lead the company. For weeks, while keeping his identity a secret using sophisticated technology, Bruce has been hunting down the Red Hood Gang and sabotages several of their operations, but is unable to take them down. The gang is getting stronger and stronger, equipping themselves with Wayne Tech and causing several random acts of violence throughout the city. However, following a surprise party for Bruce by his uncle, the Red Hood Gang, thanks to a tip from Nygma, ambush Bruce and give him a vicious beating. Bruce barely makes it back to the manor where he is nursed back to health by Alfred. Enraged by Nygma's actions, Philip attempts to kill the villain, admitting that Bruce is a better man than both of them, but Riddler incapacitates Philip and ends their alliance. Bruce comes to terms with the fact that he is losing this war and asks his father for guidance. Then a bat crashes through his window, and Bruce finally decides that he will become a Bat. Finally realizing his purpose, Bruce and Alfred set up their base in a cave under Wayne Manor, and Bruce sets off to strike fear in the hearts of criminals as a vigilante who the press calls Batman. He starts by methodically taking out members of the Red Hood gang, quickly establishing his reputation and finally getting the attention of Red Hood One. While investigating the gang's operations, eventually, with some help from a guilt-ridden Phillip, who was forced into becoming a member of the gang, Bruce discovers that the Red Hood gang are planning to use a dangerous toxin from the Ace Chemical factory to terrorize the city. He holds a press conference in front of the factory and exposes the gang's plans, forcing them to invade the factory right away. As Batman, Bruce fights off the Red Hood gang, but not without the death of Uncle Philip, who was killed by the leader for attempting to stop him. As the GCPD round up members of the gang, the factory burns down and Batman goes after the leader, preventing him from escaping and defeating him, but despite Bruce's efforts to save him, the Red Hood allows himself to fall into a large acid container. In the aftermath, Batman continues setting up his Bat-Cave and establishing himself as a hero in Gotham. Edward Nygma, now calling himself The Riddler, then makes his presence known and knocks out all power from the city, in an attempt to challenge the people to get smarter. During the massive blackout, a heavy storm comes and the city falls into chaos, and Commissioner Loeb makes it the GCPD's priority to take down the Batman, but to no avail, as the hero repeatedly evades them. Bruce is determined to make an enemy out of the police because he sees them as corrupt and untrustworthy, especially James Gordon, who seems to have a connection to the Waynes' deaths and Bruce resents him for it. Bruce is also working on a jammer, because he feels that, even if the police manage to get the power back, they'll only fall into Riddler's trap and another blackout will take place. During this time, a series of suspicious murders have taken place, the victims, who were scientists working for Wayne Enterprises, had been ripped apart from the inside after their bones radically grew out of their body. Bruce investigates these murders and he is eventually led to Doctor Karl Helfern, a former Wayne Enterprises scientist who developed the formula that causes these effects. Bruce decides to visit the only man who may know something about it, Lucius Fox, an engineer who used to work for Bruce's father but was fired by Philip. Fox reveals that Helfern was working on a serum that was supposed to harden bones for protection against trauma, but it became unstable, and so was Helfern. However, Fox reveals that it was also his project and injects Bruce with something that incapacitated him, thus apparently revealing himself as an ally of Helfern, who is now known as Doctor Death. Bruce is kidnapped by Doctor Death, who has apparently injected himself with his own serum but instead of killing him, it has turned into a monstrous figure and becomes even more unstable. He almost kills Fox, but Bruce manages to fight him off. Lucius apologizes for the injection and reveals that it was actually a vaccine against Helfern's serum. As the two try to make their escape, Doctor Death catches up to them, now has become even more monstrous, and almost kills Bruce if it wasn't for the timely intervention of Gordon, who shoots Helfern and knocks him out of the building. Bruce is brought to a hospital where he is confronted by Gordon who wants to help Wayne and seeks to get more information about the killed scientists. However, Bruce does not like Gordon because he believes that, before his parents' deaths, Gordon and his partner, Corrigan, once escorted Bruce, who believes to have seen them take bribes from the neighbourhood. Bruce declares that Gordon and the rest of the police are crooked and that he will never trust them. Full Plot Bruce Wayne In: At the age of nineteen in Rio De Janeiro, Bruce met a criminal by the name of Don Miguel who taught Bruce high-speed driving and several insane driving tricks including colour cover, crowd ducking among others. In their final lesson, however, Bruce was instructed to lose the Policia in a bright red custom-made convertible car. After an intense car chase, Miguel attempted to kill the cops using a dangerous, but Bruce, having learned everything he needed from the criminal and wanting to prevent him from causing any more damage, crashes the car, trapping Miguel before finally knocking him out and leaving him to be apprehended by authorities. At the age of twenty-one, in Egypt, Bruce seeks out an old Russian scientist named Sergei to teach him what they call the impossible. He challenges him to test by trapping him under the Sphinx, where he has limited supplies and oxygen. Bruce spends six months preparing for this test, tinkering with tools and planning for every scenario in order to survive, but Sergei tells him that he needs to go beyond planning and what is called possible in order to survive. Indeed, once Bruce is actually trapped, most of his preparations weren't operational and he was forced to go beyond what he thought is possible in order to escape and pass Sergei's test. At the age of twenty-four, Bruce found himself in the middle of a pit in the Northeast of Harstad, Norway, fighting for twenty-eight hours straight in deathmatch, defeating every fighter to challenge him but avoided killing anyone despite the insistence of the Pit Queen. Bruce came to this pit seeking to use his body to wage war, but the Queen claims that he cannot win this war without killing, and he will continue to fight until he dies. However, Bruce persists, winning battle after battle but without killing anyone, and in the end, there were no more fighters to challenge because they were all afraid of him. Secret City: Bruce's disguise is blown The story starts six years ago, having recently returned to Gotham City after travelling the world, Bruce Wayne decides to use the skills he learned abroad to cleanse his city of crime, his first target being the Red Hood Gang, a growing group of criminals made up of middle and upper class Gothamites who were convinced or blackmailed into joining the group by the leader, whose identity still remains a mystery to Bruce, as he never takes off his mask, not even in front of his crew. Using a disguise, Bruce infiltrated the group but his cover was eventually blown, and he was cornered by the gang. Though he managed to escape and save the hostages held by the gang, this encounter showed Bruce's carelessness and lack of discipline that almost jeopardized the entire mission. Edward Nygma Back at his base, Bruce's faithful butler Alfred Pennyworth, who is heavily against Bruce's crusade, tries to talk some sense into him and attempts to convince Bruce to announce his return to the city, but Bruce says that he wants to remain legally dead as he feels that he's more efficient that way in his war and he doesn't want to be distracted by "Bruce Wayne". On his way out of the manor, Bruce is met by his uncle Philip Kane, much to Alfred's dismay, who reveals that he was the one who declared Bruce legally dead so he could re-built Wayne Enterprises into something new, by merging it with Kane Chemicals, becoming a leader in protective technology, specializing in weapons. Bruce disapproves of what his uncle has done with the company, and despite Philip's attempts to convince Bruce to take control of the company, he refuses because that's not what he's here to do and it's not who he is. Later that night, while meeting with an associate, Philip reveals that he wants Bruce to lead the company to improve the company's public image since they are hated for building weapons, and to make matters worse, the Red Hood Gang is stealing those weapons from them. The associate, who is revealed to be none other than Edward Nygma, tells him that the solution to Philip's problems, or Riddle as Edward calls it, is simple: killing Bruce Wayne. The Red Hood Gang Strikes The Red Hood Gang hijack Luca Falcone's blimp, as part of their plan to take over all other gangs in Gotham. After the leader, Red Hood One, throws Falcone off the blimp, he gloats to his captive, who appears to be Oswald Cobblepot, about having acquired all the drugs, information and advanced weaponry, including a Wayne Sonic Rifle. Then suddenly, "Cobblepot" attacks Red Hood One and reaches for his hood, but gets electrocuted. The Hood then deduces that this is, in fact, the vigilante who has been giving them trouble for the last few weeks. It was in fact, Bruce, having kidnapped the real Cobblepot and trapped him in the blimp's basement, disguised as the villain, in another attempt to take down the gang. Impressed, the Red Hood leader offers Bruce a spot on his team, claiming that they are two of a kind, but Bruce refuses and manages to take down some of the Hood's men, and even stabs the leader with his gauntlet, thereby getting a sample of his DNA. Bruce barely manages to escape unscathed, with the real Cobblepot with him. Alfred slaps Bruce Back at the manor, Bruce is still upset by the fact that he's still losing this war, as the leader's DNA has no match in any records, and he is still unable to stop this gang while it's quickly growing and becoming more dangerous. Alfred tells Bruce that his war is doomed and disapproves of the way in which he is fighting it. At Bruce's insistence, Alfred tells him that fighting from the shadows as a ghost is cowardly, unlike his parents, who fought for their city in public. He also disapproves of the fact that he is letting the Wayne name rot and leaving Wayne Enterprises in the hands of his uncle, who he sees as a sad, angry man with no purpose but glory. A heated argument breaks out between the two, as Alfred claims that Bruce's parents would be ashamed while Bruce tells him that's the real coward, provoking Alfred to slap Bruce in the face, before heading back to the manor. Bruce Wayne vs Edward Nygma After the argument, Bruce meets up with Philip at the Museum and tells him to shut down his operation because gangs have been stealing tech from Wayne Enterprises. Philip is reluctant and again tries to convince Bruce to be part of the company so they can things out, but Bruce turns him down again and insists that Bruce Wayne should stay dead. Philip then turns on the lights and reveals Welcoming Party thereby revealing his return to the city. Bruce angrily storms off and while searching for the Museum's exit, he encounters Edward Nygma. During their conversation, Nygma implies to Bruce that his uncle is giving weapons away to the Red Hood in an attempt keep them away from bigger ones, but refuses to say anymore. After solving Nygma's riddle concerning the Museum's exit, Bruce tells Edward on his way out to try harder next time, to which Edward mutters that there won't be the next time. As he reaches the manor, he is caught in an explosion set up by the Red Hood. Under the mercy of the Red Hood Bruce is then ambushed by the Red Hood Gang, who give him a vicious beating. The Red Hood reveals that the death of Bruce's parents changed his own life as well. The fact that the Waynes, scions of the city, were randomly killed by a nobody for no reason, inspired what the Red Hood gang is all about, acts of randomness inspiring madness, fear and survival. He also reveals that there is another man, like Bruce, who has been fighting them, but promises that, in the end, they will get him just like they got Bruce. Before leaving Bruce to die, the Red Hood thanks Bruce for leaving that theatre with his parents that night, because it inspired him and then proceeds to takes down down the Waynes portraits and puts two bullets through them. Severely wounded, Bruce barely manages to make his way to the lower levels of the Manor before passing out. Meanwhile, it is revealed that Edward Nygma was the one who sent the gang after Bruce, and Philip, enraged by actions, threatens to kill him. However, Nygma says a password that activates the magnetic plate in Philip's head, which was placed there after a childhood accident, causing Philip to collapse and to be incapacitated. Nygma announces his resignation and leaves Philip laying on the floor in pain, but not before Philip taunts him with the fact that despite all his strategies, he's nothing more than a shadow, an empty question mark and that no one will know who he is. Edward simply pauses and tells him goodbye. The moment of truth Bruce is found by Alfred and was nursed back to health. Alfred tells Bruce that despite their differences, he promises that he will always be there to patch him up. Bruce simply taps him on the shoulder as a sign of gratitude. Bruce then wanders the mansion, distraught at the fact that he is unable to win this war, and then faces a statue of his father, asking for guidance. Remembering the traumatic event as a child when he fell into a pit near Wayne Manor, before he was saved by his father, he was attacked by a swarm of bats. His father once told him the lifeblood of Gotham runs under Wayne Manor and asks him what the city told him to be. Just then, a bat crashes through the window and lands on Thomas Wayne's statue. Bruce replies "Yes I see. Yes, Father. I shall become a bat." Dark City Finally realizing his purpose, Bruce and Alfred set up their base in a cave under Wayne Manor, and Bruce sets off to strike fear into the hearts of criminals as Batman. He starts by methodically taking out members of the Red Hood gang, quickly establishing his reputation and finally getting the attention of Red Hood One. Following the gang's heists, Bruce sees no patterns, as all their acts are random, and decides that he needs help from his uncle. Philip is extremely regretful of what happened and reveals that he has been marked by the gang and forced to become a member himself. He gives Bruce access to the system which allows Bruce to realize what the gang's plan is, when and where they are planning on executing it. On the anniversary of the Waynes' murders, the gang is planning on forming a deadly poison using material obtained from the Ace Chemical factory, and exploding at several different locations around the city. Bruce realizes that this is a job for Bruce Wayne, not Batman, so he holds a press conference the day before the scheduled execution of the plan, outside the Chemical factory, to officially announcing his return to Gotham City. He goes on to explain why he came back despite what happened to his parents, because Gotham city, despite its flaws, is transformative and challenges everyone to be the best person they can be. He exposes the Red Hood Gang's plans and encourages the people of Gotham to fight back against this menace. Before he could finish, however, the gang launch their attack in an attempt to kill Bruce, but he is saved by Lieutenant James Gordon. During the confusion, Bruce sneaks into the factory during while Gordon attempts to lead a group of cops through the front door. Inside, Bruce is confronted by Red Hood One, who is impressed by Bruce's efforts but tells him that the cycle of randomness opened with his parents' murder and it will close with his death, and the destruction of the factory with the police inside while the gang escapes through the back entrance with what is available of their toxin, which they will unleash on the city the next day, opening a new cycle. But Bruce tells him that his parent's death may have been random and meaningless but their lives weren't, and he tells Red Hood that his life is an abomination and he is nothing more than an evil man pretending to have a purpose. Just before the leader can pull the trigger, a massive outage takes place in the entire neighbourhood, thanks to Alfred, and in a masterfully executed facade give the illusion that Batman appeared to save Bruce. The light then goes back on, and Bruce, now suited up, as Batman, appears and engages the gang in combat and gains the upper hand while Alfred shuts down the bay doors to prevent the gang from escaping. After defeating most of the gang, Batman is almost shot by Red Hood One, but he is saved by a member of the gang, who is then shot and killed in retaliation by the leader. To Batman's horror, it is revealed to be his very own uncle Philip who was forced into joining the gang. As the place starts to go on fire, Gordon and the police enter the factory and confront Batman, who manages to evade them to go after the fleeing leader. As the police round up the incapacitated members of the gang, on the rooftop, Red Hood attempts to make his escape using a helicopter but Batman grapples onto him and they both plummet into the burning factory. They engage in combat and Batman finally defeats the Red Hood but the railing they were standing collapses. Batman extends his hand and tries to save his enemy but the Red Hood refuses and declares that this is just the beginning before allowing himself to fall into the acid below. In the aftermath, Bruce and Alfred finish setting up the Bat Cave, and they finally reconcile, with Alfred telling Bruce that his parents would have been proud of him and that Batman's legend begins with him saving Bruce Wayne thus cementing their separation into his legacy. A gun wielding Alberto Falcone states “I am Holiday.” The armored officer who Alberto shot in the last issue rises to confront him. Captions reveal that this “officer” is Batman in disguise, and that his body armor was more than enough to stop the 22. pistol. He twists the gun out of Falcone’s hand. Gordon pounces on it. Batman brutally beats Falcone while thinking angrily about how he suspected his friend Harvey Dent of the killings and not this man who the coroner had pronounced dead. Gordon eventually puts a halt to the beating and Batman reluctantly allows the commissioner to arrest the man. Carmine Falcone has come to visit his son in jail. Alberto has casts on both arms. Gordon and Batman watch the scene through a one-way mirror. Carmine whispers to his son that he thinks he can get him out of jail if he confesses to the Maroni murder and nothing else. Alberto gets angry. He tells his father that his birthday is on a holiday and dares him to name which one. He knows that Carmine will not know that it was Valentine’s Day because his father was always too busy to know when it was his birthday. Alberto states that Gotham has changed and no longer wants organized crime. He states that as Holiday he is bigger than all of Gotham’s mobsters put together. Gilda Dent is handing out Halloween candy when the Gordon’s stop by. She confides in them how much she misses her husband. At Arkham Asylum numerous cells are open and empty. A coin tossing figure stops at the cell of Julian day, apologizes, and leaves him there. At his high-rise The Roman is furious. He cannot believe that his son is choosing to defy him even though it means the gas chamber. Ivy creeps up the walls of his home. Gas leaks down the hallways, guards start laughing hysterically. The lights go out. Carmine tells Sofia he wants everyone downstairs. As they descend they find their path littered with the bodies of his men. When Falcone enters his study he finds it occupied by the Mad Hatter, Solomon Grundy, the Joker, Two-Face, the Penguin, Scarecrow, Poison Ivy, and Catwoman. Two-Face rises from Falcone’s desk and accuses him of tearing his city in half. He calls attention to the .22 pistol he is holding. The Roman says he would rather burn down the city than surrender it to the freaks. Smoke and flash grenades fly in through the windows. Batman enters from the ceiling, landing on Grundy. He then takes out Joker, followed by Ivy, then Penguin and Mad Hatter. He takes out Scarecrow with a Batarang. He asks Catwoman which side she’s on, she tells him it’s the same side she’s always on. Before she can finish the thought Two-Face demands the hero’s attention. He is holding Carmine at gunpoint and explaining the futility of the legal process, since the criminals will never stay in jail or Arkham for long. He refuses to answer to Harvey. He tosses his coin. Te scarred side comes up and he puts two bullets in The Roman’s head. Sofia charges him. Catwoman attempts to subdue her. The two women plunge out the window. Catwoman is left holding onto her bolo and dangling tens of stories off the ground, there is no sign of Sofia. Batman tries to talk down Two-Face. Dent seems to buy it at first, approaching the hero, however, as soon as he gets close he clubs him with the gun and escapes. Two-Face arrives at his former office. He confronts Vernon about giving Maroni the acid that was used to scar him. He flips his coin. When Batman arrives on the scene he finds Vernon dead with the gun and coin left next to his body. The Bat Signal lights the sky. When he responds to it he finds a reflective Two-Face waiting for him. Harvey says that what he did was necessary to eliminate The Roman. Then he turns himself in. As Gordon puts the cuffs on, Dents states that there were two Holiday killers. Later Gordon and Batman muse on what he meant by that. Batman suggests that by killing The Roman on Halloween Two-Face became the second Holiday killer. Both men then ponder whether their war on organized crime was worth the price they paid. Gordon’s wife approaches him. She has heard he arrested his friend Harvey. She asks what he’ll do now. He states that he has to continue because he believes in Gotham. Batman reflects from a rooftop about the promise he made his parents. He feels he must continue, because he believes in Batman. In Arkham Two-Face calls out for Gilda. On Christmas Eve, Gilda Dent is packing up to move. She states that she did what needed to be done so that she and Harvey could spend more time together when he didn’t have to work as much. She states that she read his case files about how to alter guns, and leaving clues at murder scenes. She figured if she did that no one would suspect someone as ordinary as her. She states that she performed the first three Holiday murders. When Harvey came home after the Alberto shooting with wet hair despite the fact he was wearing a hat, she knew that he had picked up where she left off. With Alberto behind bars she is confident that no one will ever know the truth. She states that she believes in Harvey Dent.

The recently disfigured Harvey Dent is in the Gotham Sewers. There he encounters Solomon Grundy. Grundy attacks the former district attorney, chanting “Solomon Grundy, born on a Monday.” Dent recites the rest of the rhyme, this placates Grundy. Harvey wonders if Grundy has in fact died and risen from the dead. He wonders if a man can live two lives. Batman and Jim Gordon meet on the roof of police headquarters. Inside Harvey’s briefcase they found one of the Holiday pistols as well as Falcone’s ledger which would have allowed him to find all of the victims. Gordon accuses Batman of hiding suspicions of Dent. Batman refuses to believe that the man who made plans to bring down The Roman is the killer. The two exchange heated words before Gordon tells Batman to locate Dent and leaves the roof. Batman arrives at the bedroom window of Carmine Falcone. He asks the mobster for the location of Harvey Dent. The Roman becomes enraged. He denies any knowledge of Dent’s whereabouts and suggests that Batman and the police let Holiday continue killing for so long because it was his people being murdered. He says that his people are calling this year The Long Halloween. He gets in the caped crusaders face and is thrown across his bedroom for it. Sofia immediately barges in with a gun. Batman is already gone and Carmine pretends he has never been there. Across the street Batman finds that Catwoman is spying on him and Falcone yet again. He confronts her and asks why she has been doing so. She gives several playful answers and then flees into the night. Gilda Dent, apparently hearing something in her basement descends the stairs looking for Harvey. Instead she finds Batman. Batman asks for Harvey’s location. He tells her about the gun they found in the briefcase. She repeats Dent’s story about it being evidence from the office. Batman informs her that gunmetal was found in the grooves of Harvey’s vice. Gilda implores Batman to find her husband. Batman once again questions the Calendar Man. Julian Day begins skirting the issue of Holiday’s identity once again. Batman informs him that they know that Dent was the killer. Day states that he is angry that he is being forgotten. He reminds Batman that it is Labor Day for a few more hours, and that they have something Holiday wants. Jim Gordon and a heavily armored officer arrive at Maroni’s cell to move him. As they move the criminal through a dark basement hallway he brags about how he took three bullets to the chest in the courtroom and is now fine. Gordon mentions that he almost feels like handing the criminal over to Dent. Maroni says he welcomes an attempt by Dent on his life. Two shots take the top of the mobster’s head off. Gordon drops to see if Maroni is still alive. The armored officer leaps at the shadowy figure of Holiday and takes at least four bullets to the chest. Gordon grabs his flashlight and shines it at Holiday to reveal that the man standing over him is none other than the presumed dead Alberto Falcone.

In the Dent family basement Gilda confronts an angry Harvey. She has found a modified .22 exactly like the ones that Holiday uses. He claims it is a piece of evidence. Gilda seems suspicious that he would bring evidence home with him. Harvey claims it is a regular occurrence, and storms off. It is August second, in the middle of the day. Batman has come to a dive bar in Gotham looking for the Riddler, the only person Holiday has left alive. Since Batman is not nearly as intimidating in daylight the bartender attacks and Bats is forced to clean out the bar. He discovers the sole patron left conscious is an inebriated Riddler. Batman asks Riddler if he saw Holiday on April Fool’s Day. Riddler dodges the question. Batman asks what Riddler was doing in The Roman’s building in the first place. Riddler informs him that Falcone wanted Nigma’s take on the killings, and didn’t like the masked criminals answers. Riddler suggests he was left alive as an April Fool’s prank. Batman suggests that his foe was left alive because Falcone wanted the world to know he was looking for Holiday. Carmine Falcone is in his study. His sister Carla is furious that he had hired Poison Ivy, Riddler, Scarecrow, and Mad Hatter. Carmine informs her that he doesn’t need to explain himself to her. Carmine’s daughter Sofia enters and informs the siblings that “they’re ready.” Sal “The Boss” Maroni is frisked and escorted towards the courtroom where he is prepared to testify against Falcone. Dent’s corrupt assistant Vernon arrives and gives Maroni a bottle of stomach medicine. Maroni expresses disbelief that Dent suddenly cares about his ulcer, but takes the bottle. Harvey Dent calls Maroni to the stand. It is revealed that Sofia was calling her father and aunt downstairs for The Roman’s birthday celebration. Maroni begins confessing to murders. He complains of his ulcer, Dent acts like this is the first he’s heard of the ailment. Dent asks the crimelord if he committed the murders under direct order from Carmine “The Roman” Falcone. Maroni begins a coughing fit. He reaches for his bottle of medicine, uncaps it and hurls the contents at the district attorney’s face. Carmine Falcone blows out the candles on his birthday cake. Dent writhes in agony. Maroni informs Dent that the acid he’s hurled at him is strong enough to eat through cement. He mocks his victim as he is dragged out of the courtroom. A disguised Bruce Wayne is horrified by the scene. At the hospital a surgeon enters the waiting room to find Gilda Dent and the Gordon’s. He informs them that Harvey is gone. He clarifies that he means that literally, as in escaped, before he topples lifelessly into Jim Gordon’s arms with a scalpel lodged into his back. Carla is looking through the records of the Gotham coroner. The shadowy figure of Holiday arrives and shoots her dead. She falls among piles of scattered files.

The Gotham city coroner is parked in his hearse. A shadowy figure arrives through the fog. The coroner panics as Holiday shoots the coroner and throws his body off of the dock. The now empty car is parked on the docks under the bridge in the midst of Gotham’s Independence Day fireworks display. Bruce Wayne is spending the fourth with Selina Kyle at his mansion. Selina asks him to leave Gotham with her. He mentions a promise he made to his parents. The couple witnesses the Bat Signal in the sky. Batman arrives at the roof of the police station to find it is Harvey Dent that has summoned him. Dent is flipping the coin that his mentally ill father gave him on Father’s Day. Dent speaks of the pact that Dent, Jim Gordon, and the caped crusader made to bring down The Roman. Dent says he made a mistake going after Bruce Wayne. He expresses his relief that with the testimony of Maroni the entire episode will soon be over. He says that with Falcone behind bars he plans to take some time off. Gordon arrives at the rooftop to inform them of Holiday’s latest killing. Catwoman has witnessed the scene from another rooftop. Dent’s corrupt assistant Vernon brings Maroni a visitor. It is Sofia Falcone Gigante. She reminds Sal that when she was arrested she served her time and did not ever mention his name. He says that she did what was right for her, and he has to do what is right for himself. Sofia tells Sal that she missed him while she was locked up, the two kiss. She tells him that she knows Dent has him cornered, and that without the District Attorney everyone will lay off. She leaves after informing him that she knows he will do the right thing. Gilda Dent and Barbara Gordon (Jim’s wife) are talking at the Gordon’s apartment. Gilda expresses her disgust with Gotham City and the way it changes people. Barbara states that with Jim’s work and their infant son they find themselves digging in. Gilda talks about how the Falcone case has been changing Harvey, eating at him from the inside. She wonders if she will ever see the man she married again. Batman and Gordon stand over the modified .22 and Lady Liberty statue that Holiday left at the scene of the latest murder. The fact that in this shooting, like the others, the shots came from close range suggests to Batman that Holiday knew the victims. Gordon, citing Batman, says that it could also be stealth. Catwoman is revealed to be watching the scene from above. Batman asks if Harvey Dent has an alibi for the time of the killings. Gordon is surprised by more fireworks hours after the display was scheduled to end. Batman pulls one of his famous disappearing acts. Two apparently bank security officers express delight at the new fireworks. A rocket strikes the door they are guarding and gives off a large green explosion. Scarecrow and Mad Hatter arrive on the scene in a horse drawn cart. Once again Scarecrow is reciting nursery rhymes while Mad Hatter is quoting Lewis Carroll. The two are loading bags of money onto their cart when Batman arrives. Our hero ponders the situation. He had previously assumed that the Mad Hatter was the only help that Scarecrow had escaping from Arkham, the bank robbery though, suggests that they are ultimately being led by The Roman. Batman neutralizes Scarecrow. Catwoman appears and takes care of the Hatter. Batman reveals that he saw her following him at the police station and the docks. She suggests that the two of them take the money and run. Batman asks for her help against Falcone. Catwoman leaves disappointed. Batman begins the task of turning in the psychopaths, musing that losing on time with Catwoman is the price of his independence.

The issue opens with Bruce Wayne having a flashback. His father opens the door to find Vincent Falcone. His son Carmine has been shot, and Vincent is afraid to take him to the hospital for fear that Luigi Maroni will finish the job. As a doctor Thomas Wayne feels obligated to help the Vincent and his seriously wounded son. He performs surgery on a table as young Bruce watches from upstairs. Flash forward and Bruce Wayne realized that his father performing field surgery on Carmine Falcone was the link that Harvey Dent followed between the Wayne and Falcone families. It has led to the arrest of Bruce Wayne, who is currently behind bars. In court Dent is questioning Alfred. He refutes Alfred’s assertion that Thomas Wayne refused all forms of payment for saving the life of Carmine Falcone. He asks about the relationship between Carmine Falcone and Bruce Wayne. Alfred states that there is no relationship. Dent inquires why Thomas Wayne never filed a report in an attempt to put Luigi Maroni behind bars. Alfred counters by explaining that Wayne may have filed a report but that the level of corruption in Gotham at the time would have led to it never surfacing. He then discusses how months later the Wayne’s were murdered in the street an the killers never found. He suggests that Gotham may not have changed very much. Luigi Maroni is now retired. He is out among his tomato plants and his son Sal is asking for advice on how to proceed now that Holiday has murdered all of his men. Luigi tells him that he needs to eliminate The Roman before Falcone gets him. Later, a shadowy figure fires from between two of the tall tomato plants. Luigi Maroni is struck in the heart. Sal rushes to his father’s side only to find one of Holiday’s signature .22 pistols and a tie in a gift box. Holiday has claimed his Father’s Day victim and has escaped once again. Sofia Falcone Gigante enters her father’s study. She informs him that the grand jury acquitted Bruce Wayne in mere minutes. The Roman informs his daughter that he is busy. The scene is now being witnessed through binoculars and heard through electronic means. Sofia gives her father an ugly tie for Father’s Day. He responds in a polite but cold manner and leaves. Sofia looks crushed. Catwoman is revealed to be the one spying on the scene from an adjacent rooftop. Jim Gordon arrives home late yet again to find that his son is already asleep with a Father’s Day tie clutched in his hand. Gordon is clearly moved as he puts on the tie. Gilda Dent descends the stairs to her basement to find Harvey there sitting alone in the dark. He reveals that he has been to visit his father. He reports that his father’s mental illness is as serious as it ever was. He also reveals that his father has given him a silver dollar. He expresses frustration over his failure in the Wayne case. He feels that the jury’s decision was as arbitrary as a coin toss. He also once again expresses his frustration at millionaires like Bruce Wayne living in high society while he is left to attempt to clean up Gotham. In Gotham’s Central Park The Scarecrow is stoking a fire in a hidden lab and reciting modified nursery rhymes. He is approached by The Mad Hatter who seems to be in his “Alice in Wonderland” universe. The two psychopaths briefly shout their delusions at each other before Carmine Falcone steps out of the shadows and informs them they have pressing business with the Gotham City Bank depository. Bruce Wayne and Alfred are in Wayne manor by themselves. Wayne is wondering “what if” his father had never saved Falcone’s life how much bloodshed might have possibly been averted. Alfred states that Thomas Wayne would have saved anyone who came to his door. Wayne continues his musing and wanders off. Alone Alfred muses how Bruce’s life might have been different if he had acted as a different sort of father figure to the orphaned millionaire. He finds Bruce crouched on the stairs in the same spot that he watched his father perform surgery on Carmine Falcone. He tells his butler that he still misses his Father. Alfred informs him that he is his father’s son. Dent’s assistant Vernon has called the district attorney into his office late. Dent is frustrated until he opens the door and finds Maroni waiting for him. The crime boss expresses his anger with Falcone and says he is willing to work with Dent to bring him down.

The issue opens with two overlapping scenes. Batman is reviewing the Holiday evidence in the Batcave. At the same time, the Falcone’s are questioning the Riddler to get his input into their own investigation. The Riddler initially proposes that Catwoman may be the perpetrator. He suggests that the small .22 handguns that Holiday used would be ideal in a woman’s hands. He reminds them of the ledger stolen from the Falcone safe after she broke in, and the subsequent million dollar bounty on her head. Riddler then suggests Maroni. He illustrates how the earlier slayings all favored Maroni, and reminds them that Maroni would have had ample opportunity to shoot Alberto on New Year’s Eve. He then comes up with the theory that Carla Viti is responsible. The theory is that when her son had been considering testifying that he would have implicated her. In retaliation she killed him and then flew into a rage and began killing other members of the various branches of the Gotham mob. Batman is becoming increasingly frustrated with the case. Alfred mentions that there is one possibility that it seems the caped crusader has been intentionally ignoring. Batman realizes that Alfred is speaking of Harvey Dent. Batman focuses on Dent as a suspect and realizes that he would have had ample time to commit any of the murders, and that the district attorney’s attitude toward the slayings has always been a little odd. Batman is forced to face the fact that his friend Harvey Dent may in fact be a murderer. Meanwhile Jim Gordon and Harvey Dent decide to move forward with their attempt to prosecute Bruce Wayne for his possible relationship with Carmine Falcone. The Roman grows tired of hearing the Riddler give him nothing but conflicting theories. His daughter Sofia puts the squeeze to Riddler’s head and Carmine demands to know the identity of Holiday. The name he gets is his own, as Riddler implicates Falcone himself. The Roman laughs it off and has Riddler sent away. As Riddler is ejected into the night a shadowy figure is waiting for him and opens fire. Instead of being killed however Riddler is only outlined in bullets before Holiday leaves the gun and an umbrella. Riddler muses “When does a killer not kill?”

The issue opens with the release of a hulking prisoner from Gotham penitentiary in the middle of a thunderstorm. The released prisoner climbs into a waiting car and is driven to Carmine Falcone. The former prisoner is revealed to be his daughter, Sofia. Bruce Wayne is addressing the board of the Gotham City Bank. He announces that he has reversed his previous position and now wishes to allow Carmine Falcone to invest his money through the bank. Captions reveal that he is aware that he is being controlled by Poison Ivy, but is essentially a helpless witness to his own actions. As he leaves the bank building he walks by Selina Kyle who attempts to get his attention. He ignores he and enters a car that is waiting for him. Selina notices an ivy covered arm in the backseat. Harvey Dent and Jim Gordon are discussing how to proceed in their attempt to bring down organized crime in Gotham. After Maroni’s restaurant was hit on Valentine’s Day the Maroni and Falcone branches have been at war. Dent wants to focus attention on Bruce Wayne, while Gordon insists that Maroni is the weak link. Dent suggests trying to bring down both at once. Unbeknownst to both men Dent’s corrupt assistant Vernon is eavesdropping on the other side of the door. Sofia enters the garage of Carmine Falcone’s sister Carla Viti. Carla is having target practice with the gun found at the scene of the Alberto Falcone murder. Sofia informs Carla that there is a plan to hit Maroni on St. Patrick’s Day, because they believe that he either is Holiday or knows the identity of Holiday. Carla says that she will now that the banking situation is taken care of and the money is flowing like it should. At Wayne manor Poison Ivy is sitting down to dinner with her puppet Bruce Wayne. Catwoman leaps into the room and attacks Ivy. The controlled Wayne interferes, battling Catwoman. In the scuffle Wayne’s shirt is ripped open revealing that his chest is covered in ivy vines. Catwoman slashes the vines off of Bruce’s chest. Wayne is freed from Ivy’s spell but loses consciousness at the same time. Catwoman looks up to see that Ivy escaped in the pandemonium. At around five in the morning on St. Patrick's Day Holiday strikes again. This time it is another mass killing with a leprechaun statue left behind. Sofia Falcone pulls up to deliver the hit on Maroni and it is discovered that the site of Holiday's most recent murders is Maroni's safe house. Batman responds to the Bat Signal to find Catwoman waiting for him. He thanks her for helping his "friend" Bruce Wayne. He asks her why she helps. She informs him that he will see in time and flees into the night. Batman reflects on just how much he owes her for releasing him from Ivy's spell.
